That book should help you sort out the details of your rifle. As Bert suggested, try to acquire a copy of Ned Schwing's paperback version of the original two volume set on these rifles. Also, the Model 62 transitioned into the Model 62A in 1939. The third model of this rifle came out in 1906, or around serial number 270000. Also, the last patent date applicable to this model is the 1911 patent date. Other than the standard barrel address, the only other marks I have seen on Model 90 barrels are inspector stamps and perhaps, on later guns, a year of manufacture stamp. If I understand you correctly, I myself have never seen a model 1890/90 barrel stamped with a serial number. There are many books that say many things, but the manufacturer did not lose money on transitions. Very common with any manufacturer and visa versa.there was not a short stop cut-off date and all manufactured product thrown away that did not 100%conform to the latest configuration. The same held true when the Model 62 converted to the 62A in the mid to late 1940's.many with serial numbers for the 62A and with a Model 62 barrel. According to the Winchester book, the factory made thousands of serial numbered frames and consumed them with sales in later years therefore the barrel may state one thing and the frame serial number another during the conversion years. The patent date of 1911 stating Model 90 indicates that the Model 90's must have gone into effect right at the time the third model versions came out.around 190? I have seen original Model 90 barrels serial numbered in 1909. It does not have 1890 on the upper tang.only the Winchester name. This rifle has been in the family since new and for a fact it has not been rebarreled. in 1910 with a patent date of 1911 on the octagon barrel. I have a barrel stamped model 90 22 short with a serial number mfg. Winchester needed to market a less expensive version of the 1890, and they did so by using a 20-inch round barrel versus a 24-inch octagon barrel, gumwood stocks versus walnut stocks, and a composition shotgun butt plate versus a steel cresent butt plate. The Model 1906 or 06 is simply just a less expensive variant of the Model 1890. By chance, does it have a "P" inside a circle stamped on the top flat of the barrel near the breech end of the barrel? So, what you have is a Model 1890 with a later production barrel installed on it. and as such, it should not have a barrel that is marked "MODEL 90". The serial number on your rifle tells us that it was manufactured in August of the year 1915. the Model 1890 became the Model 90, the Model 1892 became the "92", the 1894 became the "94", the 1912 became the "12", etc.) In April of the year 1919, Winchester eliminated the "18" (and "19") from the Model names on all of the various Models that were in active production (e.g. The Model "1890" and "90" are the exact same thing, the only difference being when they were made.
